  15. ABOUT ICON HEAVEN
  16.  
  17. Icon Heaven is a Workplace Shell enhancement that simplifies
  18. the task of keeping icon libraries on your disk and assigning icons to
  19. objects. 
  20.  
  21. INSTALLATION
  22.  
  23. Simply unzip this file (FIH.ZIP) into an empty directory and double click 
  24. on the install.cmd object, or, in an OS/2 command session, type 
  25. install+<ENTER>.
  26. The installation procedure will ask you for a directory where 
  27. Icon Heaven should be installed. After selecting a directory, 
  28. the installation procedure will copy all the necessary files to 
  29. that directory and create a number of Workplace Shell objects. 
  30. After the installation terminates, Icon Heaven will be available 
  31. in a folder on the desktop. You can move this folder from
  32. the desktop to any other folder if you wish.
  33.  
  34. The installation procedure can clean up after itself when terminating.
  35. So the directory used to run the installation from will be empty. You 
  36. only have to save the Zip file if you want to do a re-install later.
  37.  
  38. DE-INSTALLATION
  39.  
  40. If, perchance, you really don't like Icon Heaven, you can easily remove it 
  41. from your system. The installation procedure will install a de-install
  42. object in the Icon Heaven folder. Simply double-click on it and answer
  43. the obligatory queries on whether you are absolutely sure you know what
  44. you are doing and Icon Heaven will be removed. During de-install, you can
  45. ignore the dialog box that asks you to confirm closing the de-install
  46. session, it will close by itself anyway.
  47. In most cases, de-install will not be able to remove the file fim.dll
  48. from the Icon Heaven directory. You can delete this file manually later on
  49. after a reboot when the shell unlocks it.
  50.  
  51. RE-INSTALLATION
  52.  
  53. A re-installation procedure called reinst.cmd is also provided. If you
  54. happen to delete the Icon Heaven folder from your system, this program
  55. will recreate it for you, including all the icon folders. Just open an
  56. OS/2 Command Prompt window and run REINST from the directory where 
  57. Icon Heaven is installed.
  58.  
  59. THE APPLICATION
  60.  
  61. Icon Heaven uses a special type of folder, called an Icon Folder, 
  62. to store icons. These icons are not physically stored on disk where 
  63. they would take up far too much diskspace for the occasional time 
  64. you need them. Instead Icon Heaven stores icons in special 
  65. compressed libraries and only expands those when they are
  66. accessed. This reduces the storage cost of an icon to a mere 
  67. 7% of the space needed when using normal icons (on a FAT disk, savings are
  68. less on HPFS).

  70. LIBRARIES INCLUDED
  71.  
  72. This package includes a set of five icon libraries. They are:
  73.     - Wordprocessing icons
  74.     - Datacomm icons
  75.     - Games icons
  76.     - Compiler icons
  77.     - Utility icons
  78.  
  79. OTHER LIBRARIES
  80.  
  81. A separate set of libraries is available for download from the OS2BVEN forum
  82. on CompuServe. This is a big set containing some 2300 converted
  83. Windows icons. There is no need to download these if you already 
  84. have those as they've been roaming the nets for quite some time now.
  85. Please see intructions below for creating your own libraries. The file
  86. is called FIHLIB.ZIP.

  88. There is also a set of great icons created by Fred Ng <fredng@io.org>
  89. of Team OS/2 Canada.
  90. You can locate that set at:

  92. These are over 3700 high-res icons and they look a lot better than the 
  93. ones in fihlib.zip. The set is in Icon Heaven format and an install program
  94. is provided to install the libraries as part of Icon Heaven.

  96. Another set of icons you can get are the ones created by the folks at
  97. Stardock systems. I've uploaded that set to hobbes and it should be 
  98. available at

  100. This set contains very well done 3D replacements for folders and other
  101. often used WpS objects. When you see those icons you wonder where they
  102. fond the time to build great OS/2 apps like Object Desktop and Galactic
  103. Civilizations.

  112. ASSIGNING ICONS
  113.  
  114. Icon Heaven also simplifies assigning icons to objects. Instead of having 
  115. to open the settings for an object and dragging the appropriate icon to 
  116. the General page, icons are assigned by dragging the object to the icon. 
  117. A simple one step operation.
  118.  
  119. Just to avoid an easily made mistake: 
  120.  
  121.     In Icon Heaven you drop the OBJECT on the ICON
  122.     and not the other way round. 
  123.  
  124. Warp users only:
  125.  
  126. The animated icon for a folder can also be assigned directly by pressing
  127. and holding down the control key during the drag operation. Dropping on
  128. an icon with this method will change the second ('open') icon for the folder.
  129.  
  130. RESTRICTIONS
  131.  
  132. In the unregistered version, you are only allowed to assign 10 icons between
  133. each reboot of your system. This should be enough to evaluate the
  134. product. If you want unlimited usage, you will have to register.
  135.  
  136. MANAGING ICON LIBRARIES
  137.  
  138. Icon Heaven does not restrict you to using the icon libraries provided 
  139. with the software. You can easily expand the libraries provided or 
  140. create your own. This is done using normal Workplace actions, by 
  141. dragging a new Icon Folder from the Icon Folder template (the object
  142. looking like a sticky pad with an icon folder icon within it) in the
  143. Icon Heaven folder or by selecting 'Create another' from 
  144. the popup menu of an existing Icon Folder. Then you can 'connect' 
  145. the folder to a library by opening the settings and 
  146. specifying the name of a new iconlibrary (for instance: 
  147. 'C:\IHeaven\MyIcons.FIM').
  148.  
  149. Now that you've created the library, you can open it and add icons to it.
  150. Adding icons to a library is simply a process of dragging Workplace objects
  151. to the folder (they don't have to be icon files). This will populate the
  152. folder and the library.

  154. Warp users only:
  155.  
  156. If you want to add the animated icon of a folder object to a library, 
  157. drag the object to the icon folder with the control key pressed. (note:
  158. only folders currently have animated icons)
  159.  
  160. THE ICONLIB TOOL
  161.  
  162. Also included is a library manager called iconlib.exe. It allows you
  163. to list the contents of an icon library, pretty up the names of the icons,
  164. add new icons (icon files only) and set the folder name. This tool is useful 
  165. when you have big directories full of icons and you want to convert them
  166. into Icon Heaven libraries, just type:
  167.  
  168.     iconlib c:\IHeaven\cool.FIM c:\icons\cool\*.ico
  169.  
  170. and all the icons in the cool directory will be added to a Icon Heaven 
  171. library named cool.FIM.
  172. The iconlib tool also has a few other features. For an online help of
  173. the switches supported, just run iconlib without any parameters.
  174.  
  175. OBJECT DESKTOP USERS
  176.  
  177. Icon Heaven uses folders to show the icons when they are accessed. This 
  178. method can cause some problems when used on a system with Object Desktop.
  179. If OD's folder browse mode is enabled for Icon Heaven folders, the folders
  180. will not correctly populate with icons when opened. This is because OD takes
  181. over that part of the system. Browse mode has some other problems as well;
  182. new objects are never created in the active folder but in the highest parent 
  183. folder in the browse hierarchy. A minor point, but still a bit annoying.
  184. To circumvent problems with Icon Heaven and Object Desktop, just disable
  185. browse mode in the Icon Heaven folder, everything will work fine then.
  186.  
  187. DESKMAN/2 USERS
  188.  
  189. Some users of Icon Heaven are experiencing problems when they want to install
  190. DeskMan/2 on a system that has Icon Heaven already installed. When you
  191. you run into this perform the following steps to remove and reinstall Icon
  192. Heaven.
  193.     1. make a new directory and unzip the Icon Heaven zipfile into it
  194.     2. copy all existing libraries (*.FIM) to that directory
  195.     3. de-install Icon Heaven using the icon in the Icon Heaven folder
  196.     4. Install DeskMan/2
  197.     5. go to the directory with the fresh Icon Heaven and run install again
  198.  
  199. REGISTERING
  200.  
  201. Icon Heaven is shareware. You are granted a 30 day trial period to see if 
  202. you like the software. Feel free to pass it on to friends, neighbours and 
  203. colleages...

  206. Icon Heaven costs only $15. This is for a single OS/2 system lifetime licence 
  207. including any and all future updates to the product.

  222. The actual amount debited from your credit card will be slightly lower
  223. than $15, because of fluctuations in international currency rates. Payment 
  224. will be done in dutch guilders, FL 25,- (about $14.75 at the time I write 
  225. this)

  227. Private users (not companies) in the European Union but outside
  228. Holland will be charged HFL 30,-, which includes 17.5% Dutch VAT. 
  229. Companies don't have to pay VAT. I don't know why they want to make 
  230. this so hard, but those are the European rules, so I guess the best
  231. thing is to just stick to them.

  257. well as the annoying popup of the about dialog the first time you open

  278. BENIFITS FOR REGISTERED USERS

  280. As well as not having a built in limitation to the number of icons
  281. assigend, there is some added functionality to the registered version. 
  282. In the popup menu of each icon a new item will be available: 'Extract'
  283. This will allow you to extract the icon into a plain icon file.
  284. Also you can double click on an icon to invoke the Icon Editor and 
  285. change it.

  327. The next major release of Icon Heaven will support renaming of icons (You can 
  328. rename them now, but the changes won't be saved). I'm also working on a
  329. change where folder icons can be assigned as a set to an object instead of
  330. having to use two steps.
